Miscancell is a Dutch scale-up company active with the biorefining of Elephant grass or ‘miscanthus’

By using a self developed novel process, the company is able to produce sustainable raw materials for numerous industrial applications. For example, the products can be used in the chemical industry, for paper production and in construction. One of the company’s successes can be found in the production of Grassphalt ®. In this novel asphalt mixture a large part of the petrochemical bitumic binders are replaced by lignin, which fully compensates the CO₂ emission of the asphalt production. Lignin is a component of biomass and is responsible for woody biomass’ water repellency. The lignin from miscanthus and Miscancells biorefining technology is exceptionally sustainable and free of sulphur, in contrast to most available lignin grades. Having a mature and patented technology, Miscancell is working on establishing a first full scale biorefinery with a miscanthus input capacity of 50.000 tons per year and a massive CO₂ reduction potential. Hungary is one of the targeted countries for this establishment. In close co-operation with HIPA and the Ministry of Agriculture, Miscancell is examining the possibility for this biorefinery in Hungary and looking for partners that can facilitate the process.

In addition to the erection of the biorefinery, Miscancell is opening its Innovation Centre and offering its expertise and infrastructure for companies that have a need or desire to develop sustainable products and processes.
